The Oil Capital of Manitoba
Virden has called itself the Oil Capital of Manitoba since oil was found here in 1951, and the field is still working. That gives the town a set of buildings most prairie towns of 3,000 do not have: oilfield service shops, equipment bays and industrial yards, on top of the farm buildings and highway commercial that come with sitting at the junction of the Trans-Canada and Highway 83.

Old town, farm country
Virden started as a railway tent town in 1882 on a farming settlement called Gopher Creek, and the 1888 Victorian house that is now the Pioneer Home Museum is a fair sample of how old the older streets are. Garages on those houses were added long after, and their openings have moved. The RM of Wallace-Woodworth around the town is about as thinly settled as farmland gets, and the bulk of the rural work is machine sheds, quonsets and shop doors.
