The town
Kipling sits where Highway 48, the road west to the Trans-Canada at White City, meets Highway 9 running south toward Moose Mountain, and it has been the office town for the RM of Kingsley since 1919. The railway station went up in 1908 and the town was incorporated in 1954. It is a stable place of about 1,100 people, with a health centre opened in 2014 that serves the whole district and a main street that includes the 1920s catalogue house made famous in 2006 when a man traded his way up to it from a single red paperclip.
The farms of the RM of Kingsley run grain, livestock and mixed operations, and there is a large hog genetics operation in the district. Oil exploration and service work has been growing around Kipling as well, which adds equipment bays and shop doors to the mix.
